Regional Conference Plans A New Feature - The Section 89 News Challenge Successful CPPCs Upcoming Chapter Events and much more.... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, Thanksgiving is upon us already--can the end of the semester be far behind??? Read on to find the news from Sectionals, and a host of upcoming activities from Section 89 chapters... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Paperwork Should be in by now... As always, the usual reminder... Every chapter should have registered your pledges long ago. Now be sure to register (by sending both the form, and the accompanying money, $25 each) as soon as they become a brother. And, of course, each chapter should have filed their Charter Reaffirmation and paid their AAMD (Annual Active Membership Dues, 8$ per brother) by now as well. Expect to hear from me soon if you haven't. An along the same lines, Section 89 Dues is due as well. This dues is $2 per active brother (whoever you paid AAMD to Nationals for). This money is used to fund all the fine Section activities you keep hearing about. A separate letter is being sent to each chapter about this, with all the details. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sectional Conference News What Happened in Oneonta? Well, the Sectional Conference is Oneonta was, as always, a busy one for Section 89. In addition to the fine social programs, and great service projects, there were some excellent workshops, on a variety of topics both APO and beyond. Section 89 had many members participate in the Leadership Development Workshop and many in the Membership Vice-President's Workshop. Great to see Leadership Development is alive and well in Section 89! There wasn't a whole lot of pressing business, and perhaps because of this relaxed schedule, we were able to do quite a bit of planning. Both in the Sectional Advisory Committee Meeting and in the Section Business Meeting, there was some very valuable discussion in planning for upcoming Section Events. The results are summarized in another article. In addition, we discussed the future of Section Conferences, along with some interesting ideas for future conferences, including the possibility of trying a Section 89 Conference in the Fall, as an alternative to the large, joint conferences we currently hold with Section 88. Nothing is in the works for this -- so don't expect any changes in the next year. But, the topic has been raised for discussion. In addition, there was some discussion of perhaps scaling back some conference activities as a was of trying to contain the costs of conference attendance somewhat. If you have any ideas on these, or other topics, please pass them on. I'm sure we'll continue to discuss these topics in the future. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Region I & II Conference Schenectady, Here We Come! And who can forget, we have a big Region I and II conference coming up, December 28-30th, in Schenectady, NY. Each chapter should have received registration materials by now; let me know if you haven't. And a bonus: there will be a Chapter President's Workshop (really for all officers and potential officers), just before the conference, beginning on December 27th, and ending on the 28th. This is a program of the National Leadership Development Committee, and has been described as a LDW-2, with emphasis on officers. A great opportunity here, because it is otherwise only offered during the summer, at a few locations around the country, and at national conventions. If you think you might want to be an officer someday, or just want to improve your leadership skills, think about the CPW, December 27th. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off than if you had tried to do nothing and succeeded. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- N e w s F r o m T h e C h a p t e r s Phi Information What's Happening In Syracuse [Marilyn Mims, Phi Chapter] Phi chapter will be inducting their Fall 1993 pledge class into the Brotherhood of Alpha Phi Omega on December 3, 1993 at approximately 7:30pm in Hendrick's Chapel on the Syracuse University Campus. We could not have done it without you, and without you it could not have been the success it was. If you have any feedback that you would like to supply please send it to: Michele Nunes Rm 123 Hays Hall Oneonta, NY 13820 All feedback will be collected, adjusted and sent to the next two chapters so that they may be able to support a better sectional conference than we did (If that is their goal), or just learn and benefit from our mistakes before they make them on their own. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The one who rows the boat generally doesn't have time to rock it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plans for Section 89 Events, Spring 1994 What We Planned at Sectionals We made quite a few plans for the spring semester - be sure to mark them on your calendar now, and watch your mailboxes for more information soon. Leadership Development Grants Once again we will offer Leadership Development Grants--money for your chapter to do Leadership Development Activities. Yes, free money, just for making yourselves better Leaders. An Unbeatable Deal ! Look for more details soon. Fall 1994 88/89 Conference And for those of you who really like to plan ahead, the Fall 1994 Section 88/89 Conference will be hosted by St. Lawrence University. I believe that is set for November 11-13, 1994 (although I can't find that date in my notes anywhere.... Help me out if you know for sure.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Nuts & Bolts - A Chapter How-To Feature Ideas for a More Effective CPPC Chapter Program Planning - A Vital Aspect of A Healthy Chapter Staring at the giant stack of paper known as a "Chapter Program Planning Conference [CPPC] ?" Daunted by what looks like an enormous task ? Don't Be. Is isn't anything as bad as it looks like. Yes, it is a thick stack of form-like papers. But it is designed entirely as a tool to help chapters review and plan all aspects of their programs. The form itself isn't meant to be filled out in full in one sitting. In fact, it isn't necessarily meant to be "filled-out" at all. What it is, is a suggested format for how you might arrange your chapter's program review. But like any tool, to be effective, you must adapt the CPPC to your own chapter's programs and needs. You need to consider the size and style of your chapter, and carefully choose which issues to work on. You may, for example, want to structure your CPPC in several "rounds". The bulk of the work in each round is carried out in small groups, reconvening in the large group to review and discuss the results of each "focus group." In the first round, each group might consider the major program areas, as recommended by the CPPC format - Membership, Service, Rush/Pledging, etc. By reviewing the past goals and past performance, and setting some goals for the future, each focus group will likely identify specific key issues which may need further exploration. These issues can provide a great basis for the second round of discussion groups, i.e. each group discusses a specific issue identified during the first round. For example, in the "membership" discussion, you may have identified "associate membership status" as a topic needing attention. During the second round, a small group can work out details of how you would like to modify your chapter's associate member program. By following a multi-tiered format as suggested here, you accomplish several important goals of a CPPC: - You review and set goals not only for the large-scale programs, such as "membership", but you can also tackle very specific issues needing attention. - The "divide-and-conquer" approach of working in small groups makes it much easier to work out complicated issues, like those often associated with membership, pledging, or service programs. - In the end, you have not only broad goals for each major program area, but also specific ideas to be implemented in those programs. For more information about Chapter Program Planning Conferences, or for help in doing one, contact your Section Chair, Section Staff, or other APO staffer. We'll be glad to help with this important aspect of a healthy APO chapter. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Section 89 News Challenge New Feature !!! As if there weren't already enough great reasons to read the Section 89 News, now there's yet another one... The Section 89 News Challenge. Each issue will have a new and different Challenge. To answer the Challenge, send your answer to me (address info below) before the next issue date (usually every 3-4 weeks). In the next issue, I will print the correct answer and a list of those who answered correctly. And I will randomly choose a winner from all correct answers who will win a select prize. And as if that weren't enough, at Sectionals this Spring, I'll choose a winner randomly from all the correct answers between now and then to win the big "Grand Prize." Enter today! This Issue's Challenge: [Difficulty: 10/10 !] All of the quotes in this issue are from the same, Section 89-related source.
