Xi Zeta Shanty Town Project Upcoming Chapter Events and much more.... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I suppose you're looking for an explanation about that last newsletter. What can I say--things happen that we can't always explain... (And no, I had not been drinking.) But I assure you, there's nothing but pure news in this issue - No Foolin' ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Shanty Town R.I.T. Sleeping Out for a Good Cause [Jaime Grimes, Xi Zeta Chapter] From March 9th through the 11th, the Brothers of Xi Zeta chapter of Alpha Phi Omega became homeless to benefit the salvation army. They gave up their warm homes and plunged themselves into the sub-zero temperatures of Rochester, New York for 60 hours straight. They set up their shanty town directly outside of the RIT Student Alumni Union. In order to make this town, the Brothers recycled cardboard from nearby dumpsters and made small abodes. This home away from home served a dual purpose. It was the headquarters for collecting food, clothing, and monetary donations for the Salvation Army, and it served as a reminder of how some people have to live their lives. The intent of the project was to have people take a break from their daily routines in order to realize that not everyone is fortunate enough to have something they can call home. Only through understanding can we start to solve this problem. The homeless problem is one of enormous magnitude. It is not just one that affects alcoholics and the mentally ill. It is a condition that is affecting the elderly, the young, and even whole families. This problem could affect anyone. This project to promote awareness of homelessness was released through news footage on all three local news channels and a cable news network. Two local news paper and some radio stations covered the project as well. Most of the reporters wanted to know why anyone would spend the night outdoors in the middle of a snow storm. The participants' answers varied, from "Mother Nature has a way of kick you when your down" to "Even though we have the choice to go home to our warm beds, homeless people don't get that choice." The project also reached its other goal to collect donations. In the span of just three days, the Brothers raised $510.00 in monetary donations, and over 350 pieces of clothing and food. The final benefit was to the Xi Zeta Brothers in understanding the problem of homelessness in a whole new light. That understanding can be summed up in the following quote. "I now have an idea as to what it would be like not to have a place to live, no place to call home. It is not a problem I would wish on anyone or a feeling I would ever like to have again." The brotherhood of Xi Zeta would like to take this opportunity to thank those brothers who came from ABXi to become part of the homeless population of RIT. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. At the upcoming conference in Rochester, we'll have a Business Meeting. Not a whole lot of "official" business going on, but we always seem to find plenty to keep ourselves busy for the hour anyway... We will be voting on: - Election of Section Chair - Reimbursement to me for expenses for the last COW - Host chapter and weekend for the Spring 1994 Sectional Conference. And of course, we'll also try to figure out what we want to do as a section, and when we want to do it. This means: Each chapter should have two voting delegates attend the Section Business Meeting. These delegates should be prepared with knowledge of their school's academic calendars for next year, so we can try to schedule events with minimal conflict with vacations, breaks, homecomings, etc. In addition, I have asked that each chapter bring a Campus Map of their campus. Finally, I would ask that everyone think about just what they want to see in the section in the future, and bring your ideas (or otherwise let me know) so that we can move toward making your ideas a reality. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Quake Run!
