I hope wherever your summer found you was pleasant and relaxing. Mine was, thank you. As you begin a new year, take just a moment to think back and remember just why you joined APO. Capture that spirit and apply it to your new activities this year. Have a great one! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Project & Picnic Start the year off right... A service project and a picnic, with folks from all over the section... Sounds like a great combination to get a great year started, right? You're in luck, because we have just such an event planned. On Saturday, September 10th, we'll hold a Section Service Project and Picnic, at Letchworth State Park, a beautiful park located about 40 minutes south of Rochester, right in the middle of the section. Last year's project was clearing an overgrown trail. Wielding all sorts of implements of destruction, Section 89 took to the task, and cleared an awesome amount of brush away from the trail. After that, it was a good old-fashioned picnic, complete with picnic food and volleyball. Of course, one of the best parts of the event was seeing old friends, and making new ones across the section. Alpha Beta Xi chapter (Geneseo) is putting together the project, and Epsilon Gamma (Alfred) is coordinating the picnic. DonŐt miss this event! Look for details, including a map and directions, on the enclosed flyer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it. George Bernard Shaw ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 89 Survey Results I want to thank each of you that took the time to fill out a survey last semester. I got a lot of useful information from that, and I hope to adjust some of our programs to better meet the needs expressed in that survey. From time to time, I'll share bits of information with you; the first is a "factoid" in this newsletter, showing just how much service most brothers are doing! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section Leadership Day! Going SLeDding in September? Back by popular demand is the Section Leadership Day (formerly known as the COW!, now it's a SLED!). It's the same type of program, but it isn't just for officers anymore. Any chapter member interested in Leadership is invited to attend. In addition, be sure to invite your advisors. This is a day long leadership conference, including fun, socializing, and education. This semester's SLED will be hosted by Oswego on Saturday, September 24th. Topics will include comparing notes with officers from other chapters, a preview of convention issues to be voted on at Nationals in Dallas this December, and of course, a game show event where you can win big prizes for your APO knowledge. Also debuting at the SLED will be the all new Section 89 Chapter Resource Book, which will be packed full of all sorts of useful information for chapters in the section. So mark your calendars now. Full details will be mailed shortly, but for those who like to plan ahead, the event will get underway promptly at 10:30, and will conclude in the late afternoon. This workshop comes highly recommended by those who have attended in the past. If you have specific topics you would like to see covered, or specific issues you would like to see addressed, let me know. The plans won't be finalized until the staff and I have had a chance to talk with chapters to see what you want. This is your workshop, after all. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Mailings Watch your mailbox... Each chapter will be receiving a number of important mailings from the National Office in the next few months. Very soon, you will receive a mailing containing the Leadership Series for most officers--be sure to look over these useful guides. You will also be receiving a "Chapter Checklist", which will detail what you must do to keep your chapter in good standing. This will include a chapter roster and annual charter review, which must be filled out, signed, and returned, accompanied by the usual $8 Active Annual Membership Dues for each active brother. All of this must be completed and in the National Office before November 15th. Note that only chapters in good standing may have delegates participate in the legislative sessions at the National Convention. As with all paperwork-related items, it is easiest to just do it! and have it done and over with. Finally, be sure that newsletters and other publications are passed around your chapter. You might not find anything interesting, but someone else might. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There's not a word yet for old friends who've just met. The Great Gonzo ----------------------------------------------------------------------- National Convention Dallas isn't that far away... The upcoming National Convention in Dallas promises to be one of the most interesting in recent memory. As you know, the National Convention is the lead body of our fraternity, and many decisions about the future of the Fraternity can only be determined at a National Convention, by Brothers like you! You will be receiving a lot of information about the convention by mail in the near future, but for now keep in mind the following: If you wish to submit any legislation to be considered by the National Convention this year, be aware that it absolutely must be in the National Office by September 29th. Look to the mailing from the National Office for more information, or contact your Section Chair. Proposed legislation will be collected and mailed out to chapters for review by mid-October. If you are interested in serving on one of the 16 or so reference committees that will be reviewing legislation in Dallas, let me or Warren know as soon as possible, so your name can be recommended. And if you are interested in chairing a committee, let us know even sooner. If you have any questions about committee service, just ask. I'll be happy to fill you in on this important opportunity. As I said, details about both the legislative aspects, as well as all the other details of the conference (registration, banquets, hotel, workshops) will be arriving shortly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming Conferences: 88/89 Sectional Conference: Nov 4-6, 1994.
