Things are so busy, I almost didn't get a newsletter out. I hear that things are likewise busy in most chapters. And of course, on the Sectional and National level we have some stuff coming up too. With that in mind, let's get on with it... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sectionals Take Off to the Great White North ?! By now, each chapter should have information about the upcoming Section 88/89 Conference at St Lawrence University. Looks to be another action-packed weekend! I hope that many of you will be able to make the trek up to the beautiful North country for this event. As far as business goes, I don't expect there to be much voting to do at the Section Business Meeting, since I haven't heard of any proposals. The only one I know of is to reimburse some folks for the Project & Picnic, and the SLED. Of course, we should try to discuss some plans for upcoming events, and I'd really like to have some feedback and ideas on our Section programs. I will mention, however, that one of the workshops at the conference will be an info session for delegates headed off to Nationals in Dallas. Although much of the discussion will be aimed at explaining the legislative process, I'm sure we'll through in some discussion of other convention aspects. Our main objective will be to prepare delegates to know what is happening, why, and when, so you won't feel lost during all the action. The main point is not to discuss the merits of any particular legislation, although I'm sure we'll save some time for questions and answers that you may have. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. W. H. Davies ----------------------------------------------------------------------- November 15th Tax Day of APO... Remember, chapter paperwork is due at the National Office by November 15th. This includes your Charter Reaffirmation (signed), your chapter roster, and your Active Membership Dues of $8 per active brother. Your chapter should also complete and file the Chapter Program Review/H. Roe Bartle Award Form. This self-evaluation will be good for your chapter; kind of like taking your vitamins! Keep in mind that your chapter must be in good standing with the National Fraternity to participate in the legislative sessions (ie. vote) at the National Convention. Also due by November 15th is your Section 89 Dues, of $2 per brother. This should be sent to Alpha Beta Xi chapter; a letter explaining all the details is being sent separately to each chapter. This money goes only to the chapters of Section 89 to directly support section events, such as the Project/Picnic, and Leadership Workshops. Contact the Section Staff or me if you have any questions about these chapter obligations. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Section Success! A Project, A Picnic, and A Workshop Day... By all accounts, the several big section events that we had last month were successful. Several trails at Letchworth have a facelift, a lot of picnic food disappeared, the frisbee casualties weren't too serious, and a whole lot of good ideas changed hands between chapter leaders. These, of course, refer to the Section 89 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Nationals Down to Dallas! Big time convention in Dallas. All chapters should have both registration information and legislation to review. Contact the National Office if not. Be aware that there are addenda to the Convention Legislation which were sent out about a week after the full legislation packet. Be sure to add these changes/corrections/additions to the other legislation. There is no question that this will be a big convention, in a lot of ways. There's a lot of potential for changes in our Fraternity, and we have the obligation to try to represent our chapters as well as possible. Many have expressed concern about the difficulty and/or expense of getting to Dallas. Check below for some tips on this. Rick's Travel Tips o Get your plane reservations as early as possible. (Actually the same applies to your hotel reservations too, especially if you want to stay through New Year's.) o Use a savvy travel agent, because fares and availability vary incredibly. There are good fares available; getting at them may be the hard part. o Call around. Usually general service travel agents are better for you than calling the airlines directly. Travel agents often work solely by commission, so they need to sell you a ticket, compared to the hourly clerk at the airlines. o Be flexible - look into flying from a different, nearby city, or travel at off times or off days. The more flexible you can be, the more likely you'll find a fare on a flight to suit your needs. o Look around for special deals - there are a lot of deals out there. Some credit cards offer special deals for students, I've heard there are some airlines offering two-for-one or other similar specials, and I've seen an ad from one upstate bank offering a $100 flight anywhere for opening an account with them. Of course, watch out for restrictions and black-out dates on any special offers. o Be sure to stay over a Saturday night. Flights are always much cheaper this way; you will most likely save more than enough to offset the cost of an extra night in a $40 hotel! o Busses and Trains don't seem to offer any real advantages over flying, unless of course, you don't like flying. I've heard of many cheaper flights than either bus or train, and either bus or train will take a few days from this area. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't part with your illusions.
