Remember the Section 89 WWW Server, now available at: http://www.nnf.cornell.edu/Section89.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow! With temperatures still in the 50's, it's kinda hard to believe it's December already. But calendars don't lie, and the 1994 National Convention is coming up in about three weeks! As the semester winds down, I wish you all great success on your finals, and if not in Dallas, then I hope to see each of you next semester. Have a wonderful winter break! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- You can either take action, or you can hang back and hope for a miracle. Miracles are great, but they are so unpredictable. Peter Drucker ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SLED! SLED! Frictionless Leadership !?! In a combination that would baffle even those folks at Reese's, Section 89 will hold a Section Leadership Day and Sledding Party, on Saturday, February 11th, to be hosted by Alpha Beta Xi chapter at Geneseo. During the day, we'll hold a Leadership Workshop for everyone in the section, with a wide variety of discussion and workshop topics, and the usual lots of time to meet with colleagues from other chapters. Back by popular demand will be officer discussion groups, so officers can meet their counterparts from other chapters. We'll also have a debriefing from the National Convention, so you'll be able to hear about all the going's on in Dallas. And, as if that weren't enough for a full day of excitement, that evening we're trying to arrange a Sledding Party, probably to be held at nearby Letchworth State Park (although the details are still to be worked out.) {Then, again, we haven't had any real good sledding snow yet, but I suppose we will by February!} ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Spring Section 88/89 Conference March 31-April 2, Alfred NY The brothers at Alfred are busily planning the Spring Conference, to be held March 31st-April 2nd. It should be a great conference. Looks for details in the mail next semester, and plan to join us all in Alfred! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Good News We're Growing! I'd like to officially welcome APO's newest Interest Group. We now have a group at SUNY-Brockport beginning to form a chapter of APO! The five members (and growing) of the interest group have begun service projects and are meeting regularly. They are working on growing and setting up a chapter structure, expecting to petition sometime early next semester. You can contact either: George Berghorn at 716-395-3472, or Jennifer Payne, 716-637-8441. Mail can be sent c/o Jennifer at: 11 Holley St, Apt 1, Brockport, NY 14420. Welcome to our newest! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- More Good News Chi Pi reborn! And the good news continues. It is no secret that the Chi Pi chapter at SUNY-Fredonia has suffered from serious membership problems in the past few years, reporting no active members last year. I am extremely happy to report that a new group of people has reorganized the chapter, and Chi Pi is once again on the right track. Currently, five members strong, the group is active in a number of service projects, and intends to grow more next semester. Welcome back, Chi Pi! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Chance favors the prepared mind. Louis Pasteur ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sectionals What happened? Last month, the Kappa Phi chapter at St. Lawrence University hosted a fine Section 88/89 Conference. The weather, although wet, was remarkably warm---by far the warmest Fall conference in my memory. The program included a wide variety of workshops, projects, and of course, fellowships. As for the business of the conference, the Section meetings proceeded with the usual chit-chat and announcements, and then a real interesting thing happened. Someone brought up the topic of splitting the Fall sectional conferences, so that rather than always holding every sectional conference jointly with Section 88, perhaps each section would hold their own conference in the Fall, with a joint conference in the Spring. We've mentioned this idea in past meetings. Here's where it got interesting: During the Section 89 meeting, most everyone seemed to agree that it sounded like a good thing to try. When discussed in the joint business meeting, however, some folks from Section 88 responded fervently, almost violently against the change. A long discussion ensued to allow people to express their thoughts on the topic. Ultimately, as Section 89, it is up to Section 89 to decide how, when, and where it wishes to hold its conferences. I don't think this topic will disappear, and I suspect that we may make a decision one way of another at this Spring's conference at Alfred. So, think about it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 89 News Challenge Results Correct Answers! It gives me great pleasure to report that we finally have some CORRECT responses to a Section 89 News Challenge! First, a correction. We did indeed get a correct response to the October 19th Challenge, asking for the group that had the novelty song in the 1980s. Nadine & Louis Sapirman, ABXi alums, did indeed get the correct answer -- their note arrived in the mail the very night I had just completed preparing the November 4th edition. They correctly named Bob & Doug McKenzie! Congratulations Nadine and Louis! (One or two other folks have also answered in person, but that doesn't count... remember, answers must be in writing or e-mail). Now, on to the November 4th challenge: name the minesweeper that Frank Reed Horton served on. Several people got the correct answer (including several folks from those trivia hounds at Epsilon Gamma). But the only answer in writing (actually, e-mail) came from Rusty Babani, of Epsilon Sigma chapter. Rusty sent in the whole biography, from which it is clear that Frank Reed Horton served on the minesweeper USS Whippoorwill. Congratulations Rusty! {And the rest of you, lest you protest, this answer is right there in your pledge book-something you all should have!} FRANK REED HORTON, born at Sewickley, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) on July 17, 1896. Ensign on the minesweeper, USS Whippoorwill during World War I. B.A. degree, Lafayette College, 1926. M.A. degree in history, Lafayette College in 1938. First National President of Alpha Phi Omega. Provided the leadership to extend the Fraternity to 18 campuses. Established the first national structure for the Fraternity. Studied law in law office; also student at Boston University law School; LL.B. degree, LaSalle Extension University, 1937. Taught history, government and English at Cedar Crest and Muhlenberg colleges, Allentown, Pennsylvania for three years. Industrial accountant, Ingersoll-Rand Company, American Legion, VFW, Mason. Author of college text, "Poetry Writing and Appreciation." Numerous Scouting and APO honors and awards. Passed away August 28, 1966. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There is no conversation more boring than the one where everybody agrees. Send your answer to me in writing: e-mail or US mail. Difficulty rating: 4/10. Come up with the longest and/or best word using only the letters in "ALPHA PHI OMEGA". Each letter can be used only once. For instance, I get the words: APPLE or APPEAL.
