We're in the midst of Spring Break season (he says, writing a newsletter from the middle of a mostly deserted campus...), so the end of the year can't be too much further away. I hope many of you are planning to attend the Sectional Conference coming up March 31 - April 2 at Alfred University. I look forward to seeing you there! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- VolleyGeneseo Bump! Set! Spike!... [Erik Rueckmann, ABXi chapter] My name is Erik Rueckmann, and I'm organizing the first annual VolleyGeneseo which will benefit the National Kidney Foundation. VolleyGeneseo is a volleyball tournament that is designed for everyone. (So far we have like 42 teams signed up). It's on April 8th, at Letchworth State Park, and is $48 per team. The money can be raised by pledges or just be paid by the team. Prizes will be awarded for the most money raised and for the winning team! (So far brunch at local restaurants and other BIG prizes are being added to the list daily!) If there are any questions, you can e-mail me at EAR97@uno.cc.geneseo.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 88/89 Conference March 31-April 2, Alfred NY Each chapter should be all set to be represented at the Spring 1995 Sections 88/89 Section Conference, to be held March 31-April 2, at Alfred University. If you have any last minute questions, contact me, or Jon Springer at: springjp@screech.alfred.edu I hope to see you all there! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. Winston Churchill ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SUNY-Brockport Soon to be Petitioning Group... The Interest Group at SUNY-Brockport is growing nicely, and will soon become a petitioning group (the analog of pledging for newly forming groups.) The scheduling is still being worked out, and the timing is a little tight, so we may not be able to give much advance notice, but we'll be sure to let you know when their petitioning ceremony will be. As if you already didn't have enough reason to go to the Sectional Conference, there will be some members of the Brockport group at the conference, so be sure to take the time to meet them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Camp Schoellkopf Weekend Get-A-Way! Service with E-Funky-E... [Rusty Babani, Epsilon Sigma] Camp Schoellkopf is a Boy Scout Reservation located about 45 minutes away from the city of Buffalo, NY. Epsilon Sigma (University at Buffalo) will be going to Camp Schoellkopf on Saturday, April 8, 1995 to help out with things like: o Ripping vinyl siding off of buildings o Staining tent poles o Re-finishing cabin roofs o Building bridges o Trimming trees Aside from working on the projects above, you will have the added bonus of meeting the brothers of the Epsilon Sigma chapter!!! The cost will be less than ten dollars ($10) to cover the cost of food for the day. If you would like to attend, I must know by Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Please either email or call me so I can give you directions. My email address is babani@cs.buffalo.edu and my phone number is (716)645-5099 (leave a message w/ your name and phone number if I am not home and I will call you back). I hope you can make it! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. F. Scott Fitzgerald ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Future Conferences? As you may know, for a long time, we hold our Section Conferences jointly with our neighbor, Section 88, with the Fall conference in 88 and the Spring conference in 89. The concern was raised that attendance of Section 89 at the Fall conferences is quite low. We had about 50 attend last Fall's conference in Canton, and about 200 attend last Spring's conference in Rochester. So, one idea proposed was that each Section 88 and Section 89 could hold their own conferences in the Fall, and then we could have a joint conference in the Spring, alternating between the two sections. As with any changes, there are both proponents and opponents. We decided to gather chapter opinions and review the idea at this Spring's conference. With the joint conferences, we get more chapters together, and they are bigger productions. We get to meet a broader spectrum of people. Separate conferences would allow us to meet closer to home, with people from more nearby chapters. Although in the poll last Spring, many people indicated that travel distance was an important factor in not attending conferences, we can't guarantee that having a Fall conference in this Section would draw more people than the current ones; opinions vary. In a Section 89 conference, we could, however, concentrate on the issues which are currently important to Section 89 chapters, which are not necessarily those important to 88 at the same time. There are a lot of complicating issues, but we should try to move to a decision; perhaps at this conference. Personally, I will attend no matter where the conferences are, but I do think we should think a bit about what is best for the Section, and decide from that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Challenge Results Scrambled words present little challenge... Lots of people correctly answered last issue's challenge, the cryptoquote. The answer, which comes from "The Story Behind The Founding", and is found in the pledge manual, is, of course: Alpha Phi Omega can help bring about more nearly, through the future statesmen of the world, that standard of manhood and international understanding and friendship that will lead to a better, more peaceful world in which to live and in which to make a living and a life. Frank Reed Horton Congratulations to all those who figured it out: Rusty Babani, William Luong, and Mike Strauss of Epsilon Sigma chapter, and Keith Firstenberg, Heather Miller, Bryan Nielsen, and Jon Springer from Epsilon Gamma Chapter. Hmmmm... everybody's from just two chapters... Let's see, either only those two chapters are into solving puzzles, or only those two chapters read the news. Common folks, prove me wrong here. Let's see some responses from some other chapters, too! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- To promote cooperation, remember: People tend to resist that which is forced upon them. People tend to support that which they help to create. Send your answer to me in writing: e-mail or US mail. Difficulty rating: 7/10. This one is a little more daunting, but not really very hard. It is a mathematical puzzle, with a numeric answer. Good Luck! Take the number of the street our National Office is on, and divide it by last digit of the telephone number of the National Office, divide this answer by the number of years between National Conventions, add to this the Route Number of the Major Toll Road crossing our section, multiply this answer by the Year Alpha Phi Omega was founded. Divide this by the last two digits of the year in which we last held a Section Conference in Syracuse. Next, divide this answer by the difference between the Year the first Section 89 chapter was founded and our Region Number. The number is you get is the answer to this issue's challenge. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Personals! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ We love Dave!! : E-Funky-E...get your left over bumper stickers now! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To our new friends in Brockport: Welcome Aboard! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Looking for SWJF for service to the President of E-Funky-E and perhaps a little nookie! - We love you Andrew!!
