And once again, I'm still your section chair. I do look forward to serving you for another year, but I also look forward to some new, innovative approaches to familiar issues. I hope that you will help me by providing ideas, questions, and feedback necessary for me to do a good job. There's a lot of information in this newsletter, so take a few minutes and read! There's so much news that I couldn't even fit in the usual quotes! And have a great summer! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Gamma's Initiation & Semi-formal [Hanwook Kim] I hope everyone is having a great semester. I can't wait until April 28, because that is our semi-formal and hopefully you will be able to visit us here in Ithaca. Initiation is going to be Friday, April 28, starting at 7:30pm with our Spring Semi-Formal afterwards, starting at 9:30pm, both in the Big Red Barn. Cost will be $10. There will lots of food, brothers, and especially music. I say music because Gamma Chapter has purchased, with the help of our GREAT alumni, a stereo system--not just any old system either. We will be DJing ourselves, so this year's Semi-Formal will be one to be remembered, and everyone is invited. Please contact me at (607)253-0359 and leave a message or e-mail me at hk29@cornell.edu for more information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ES Inductions [Rusty Babani] Come join us at E-Funky-E (Buffalo) for our Inductions, April 22, 1995 9:30pm. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. Call or write for more info: (716) 645-5099, email: babani@cs.buffalo.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Brockport Petitioning Group!!!! This issue marks a happy occasion for Section 89 and Alpha Phi Omega. I am pleased to announce that on Thursday, April 13th, the Interest Group at SUNY-Brockport became a Petitioning Group, with the Ritual Ceremony being performed by members from at least 6 chapters (Mu Lambda, Xi Zeta, Epsilon Sigma, Epsilon Gamma, Alpha Beta Xi, and Phi).* The group is going strong, and looking forward to chartering in the next academic year. Look forward to meeting them at Section events this Summer or next Fall. They are a great bunch of people, and we welcome them aboard! * [Due to editing lag, there might have been more or fewer chapters present. This is the number planning to attend as of Wednesday. But details don't matter much, now do they?] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter Info I didn't do a "form" at Sectionals this year, but Please make sure I know about: (1) a summer contact for each chapter, and (2) your new Chapter Officers for Fall 1995, so that I can keep the lists up to date. Please help me with this, Please? Yes, I AM begging! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Conferences Fall Sectionals: Plattsburgh, NY, Oct 27-29. Regionals: Hartford, CT, Dec 27-30. Spring Sectionals: Oswego, NY, Apr 19-21. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tons of Events! We've planned a lot of events; some are familiar events in whole new locations! Summer Picnic Saturday, July 8th, Syracuse, NY. Hosted by Sunny Meade. Look for directions and full information in the mail, soon! And plan to attend for a good 'ole fashioned summer picnic in Upstate NY. Service Project and Picnic We'll have our annual kick-off , on Saturday, September 9th, Allegheny State Park, which is perhaps an hour Southwest of Letchworth State Park, the site of this event for the past three years. This is a bit of an out-of-the-way location, but certainly worth the visit. And we'll probably set up some special arrangements with nearby chapters to turn it into a whole weekend of fun! Section 89 Leadership Day Next up, Saturday, October 14th, Buffalo, NY. We hope to continue to build on our tradition of strong leadership development and information sharing at this meeting. By popular request, we will try to get as many advisors involved as possible! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Answer to last issue's challenge: This mathematical challenge brought a number of interesting comments from readers, some of which I can't print here... Really, it wasn't that hard. Take the number of the street our National Office is on (42, 42nd Street), and divide it by last digit of the telephone number of the National Office (7, 816-373-8667), divide this answer by the number of years between National Conventions (2), add to this the Route Number of the Major Toll Road crossing our section (90, I90-The Thruway), multiply this answer by the Year Alpha Phi Omega was founded (1925). Divide this by the last two digits of the year in which we last held a Section Conference in Syracuse (93). Next, divide this answer by the difference between the Year the first Section 89 chapter was founded (1927, Gamma, in the pledge manual) and our Region Number (2). (((42/7)/2) + 90 ) x 1925 (3+90) x 1925 93 x 1925 ------------------------- = ------------- = --------- = 1 93 x (1927-2) 93 x 1925 93 x 1925 So, the answer is 1. Simply 1. Congratulations to those correct answers: Bryan Nielsen and Bryce Nielsen (Epsilon Gamma), George Berghorn (SUNY-Brockport Petitioning Group), and Rusty Babani (Epsilon Sigma). And "Thanks for Playing" to those who were close, but not quite there. That'll teach you to use a Pentium! And "Thanks" to all who entered a Challenge this year. I hope you enjoyed them! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sectionals News At Sectionals, we had our typically hectic Business Meeting, with these results: I am still the Section Chair, as mentioned above. We set up a whole bunch of dates and places for upcoming events, see elsewhere in this newsletter. Perhaps the "big" significant news to come from the conference was that we voted to try restructuring our Sectional Conferences a bit. Our conferences next academic year (95-96) will be as they traditionally have, both conference jointly with Section 88, the Fall in Section 88 (Plattsburgh), the Spring in Section 89 (Oswego). The difference begins in Fall 1996, when each section will have its own conference. Then in Spring '97 we will have a joint conference, at a location to be determined in Spring 1996. This arrangement will allow us to experiment with the conference formats a bit so that each section gets its needs met better by its own conference. This means that we will be picking a conference location in Fall 1995 (for Fall 1996). This also means that chapters will be able to host a conference more often than once every 8-10 years or so that they would now. Also in the vein of conferences, we will continue to explore making conferences a bit less expensive and a bit less of a drain on the resources of the host chapter. I'm not sure just what this will entail - Any Ideas? The general consensus is that our conferences are good for those who attend. But we can't ignore all those who choose not to attend because the conference is either (a) too expensive, or (b) not relevant to them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Staff ? Graduating? Congratulations! Want to stay involved with APO? Great! There's never been a better time for alumni in APO. The developing Alumni program of APO is getting stronger all the time. Be sure to become a Life Member, and you'll be kept apprised of all of the possibilities. Looking to go beyond alumni associations, and give a bit more back to APO? Greater Still! Most every area of APO could use more volunteer staff. We here in Section 89 could especially use more capable, dedicated staff. Wherever you end up, if you want to stay involved, just contact the National Office and ask for contact information for local volunteers leaders (Regional Directors and Section Chairs) wherever you're going to be. If you'll be right here in Section 89, then PLEASE keep in touch with me! I'm looking for volunteers to help out on our Staff! I view staff as analogous to advisors - except with an APO background. I ask that staff get involved with local chapters, and help out with Section Events such as leadership workshops, and newsletters. If you are at all interested, just ask, and I'll provide a whole bunch more information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Brothers! Be sure you register your Spring Initiates SOON - do not delay. Personnel changes in the National Office, plus changes to the fee structure to go into effect on September 1 mean you really need to get everyone registered BEFORE summer. Believe me, you don't want to get behind on this. Ask if you have any questions or need any help with this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Personals! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Phi: Y'all worked really hard this year & you've grown tremendously! Keep up the good work. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Epsilon Gamma- Thanks for the animal crackers!!! Susan-Mu Lambda -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Congratulations to Kristen and Joel Whatley and little Daniel, born just before Sectionals! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Section 89 News | | | | The Section 89 News is published for Section 89 to provide | | communication from the Section Chair about upcoming events, | | important announcements, and amusement.
