Welcome back!
As the Summer fades and Fall returns to our beautiful
state, I hope you all are well rested and energized for another year of Leadership, Friendship, and Service!!!
As you may
or may not be aware, at our Spring conference hosted by Kappa Phi, incumbent
Keegan Daley chose not to run for re-election as Section Chair of 89. Although
he will be travelling abroad for the next three years, Keegan will remain in
close contact as a friend of the section and valued member of staff.
As the
newest Chair of Section 89, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce
myself. An alumni of the Alpha Delta Eta chapter at SUNY Albany and the Beta
Iota chapter of New York
University, I have served
in many roles, including: FVP, Pledgemaster, Rush Co-Chair, Public Relations
Chair, and national, regional, and sectional voting delegate. I have also had
the opportunity to serve as chair for a number of conferences - 2005 Joint
RI/II Conference, 2006 Section 97 Conference, and 2008 National Convention - as
well as assist in the planning of many events throughout Regions I and II.
Currently, I work as a contract laborer for the Rochester City
School District and voice
actor.
I'm
absolutely ecstatic to serve as your Section Chair!!! I have gathered a staff
of experienced, energetic, committed, and ingenious brothers who have already
teamed up in preparation for the best year Section 89 has seen yet. We all look
forward to getting to know you better and providing you with outstanding
support, unbiased feedback and guidance, and leadership training. I encourage
you all to get to know staff members, communicate with me and them frequently,
and allow us to share all the resources we have to offer. Together, I have no
doubt that we will learn much from one another as we succeed in making our
section, and the brothers in it, the best we all can be.

The Secret Ingredient is Service!
Rush Recipes...
gather a crowd with these simple and tasty treats!
Grand Strand Chicken Bog 5 chicken breasts
2-3 pre-cooked sausages, sliced -
i.e. Kielbasa
1 lg. onion, finely chopped
black pepper
hot sauce - i.e. Tabasco or
Frank's Red-hot
Boil chicken breasts for 30-40
minutes until cooked all the way through. Remove breasts and chop or shred into
edible pieces. DO NOT throw out the water. Add enough rice for the amount of
water remaining in the pot, usually 2-3 cups. Then add the chopped chicken,
sliced sausage, and chopped onion. Add pepper and hot sauce to taste. Cover and
cook until the rice is done to your liking
Fellowship Frittata 4 stalks celery, finely chopped
4 carrots, finely chopped
1 lg. onion, finely chopped
1-2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1-2 pre-cooked sausages, chopped -
i.e. Kielbasa
½-1c instant baking mix - i.e.
Bisquick
8-10 eggs
black pepper
hot sauce
cheese, grated
Sautee chopped celery, carrots,
onion, and garlic in olive oil until soft. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Scramble eggs; you can add a splash of milk or water to thin out the mix. Mix
in pepper and hot sauce to taste. Add vegetables and grated cheese of your
choice. Lastly, add instant baking mix as needed. Consistency should be that of
pancake batter. Pour the mixture into a greased pie pan and bake for 30-40
minutes at 400˚.

Fall 2009 Namesake: Get ready for the Jack Pack!
Assuming
you've successfully managed to lure in those sticky-fingered prospects
with the above recipes, it's time to give that pledge class a
name! Alpha Phi Omega's Fall 2009 Pledge Class Namesake Honoree
is Past National President Jack A. McKenzie. A recipient of the DSK at
multiple levels and a true leader from the Gamma Lambda chapter, Jack
has issued a challenge to this pledge class to serve the fraternity by
growing, sharing, improving and investing in Alpha Phi Omega.
Dubbed the "Jack Pack," this fall's pledge class is invited to take the
Jack Pack Pledge.

Supporting Scouts
We often think of providing service to many different
organizations such as Habitat for the Humanity, American Cancer Society, and
various other organizations. We should
just take a moment and think about providing service to our foundation that
Alpha Phi Omega stands for. As we study
in college and learn more about our academics, hobbies, and other attainable
skills, we should reflect our expertise to those who come to follow. We should highly think about giving back to
the Boy Scouts of America, since our principles rest upon. We need to incorporate the Girl Scouts of
America and support their roles as well.
Here is a way to give back to our heritage with what we love to learn
and enjoy. Becoming a merit badge
counselor has an extensive list of opportunities to teach and share passion of
what we love to do. Some of the Boy
Scout merit badges include Public Speaking, Communications, Photography,
Drafting, Computers, Astronomy, Swimming, Sports, Disability Awareness, and many,
many more. Many of our majors and minors
that we studied in school are included.
Being a merit badge counselor is an outstanding way to share
knowledge with younger scouts who want pursue different passion of finding out
who they would like to become. Being a
merit badge counselor is minimal time commitment. We are there to affirm the scouts meet the
requirements of the merit badge. Not
only is this great for the scouts, but this is an outstanding way to promote
Alpha Phi Omega. In doing so, when
scouts begin to go to college, they will have something to look forward
to. If not, then there is the
opportunity for them to create a new chapter.
Not only is this a way to give back to others, but to give
back to our heritage. As a merit badge
counselor for Aviation, I find great reward to helping the future learn and
continue to gain passion for learning in doing so. I ask that even though our schedules are very
busy and overloaded, that we take a moment to consider the greatness for
everyone that can come out of becoming a merit badge counselor.
For those who have further questions, or are interested please
feel free to contact me!

Website Wonderment
In the
next few weeks, the Section 89 website will be undergoing a major revamp. The underlying framework is being replaced
with a newer version, and the site rebuilt from scratch on the new
framework. This rebuild will also make
the site easier to upgrade and maintain in the future. The theme will be reworked, layout improved,
and functionality greatly enhanced.
Overall, the new site should be easier to use, have more content, and be
more cosmetically pleasing.
Lots of great content is in the works as
well for the site. Staff information,
including bios and contact info, will be available online. Chapter and conference information will be
posted, as well as general section info and upcoming events. Important contacts and forms will also be
made available, along with section newsletters.
In addition to static content, forums and
other interactive features are in the works.
We are seeking to foster active communication between chapters by
providing a central place to do so. Examples
include service, fundraising, and ride sharing forums. Presenters, workshops, and events databases
will also be available. The goal is to
provide a centralized, go-to spot for section resources and information.
While there should not be any loss of
current content or functionality, there is also a possibility of overlooking
something. Any current content should be
transferred onto the new site. If I do
miss anything by chance, let me know. I
have backups of the current site should we need anything from it later on.
While the new site will kick off at the
start of the school year, it will be a work in progress, with incremental
development over time. If anyone has
content, design ideas, or would like to help in any way let me know. We always welcome help and suggestions.

Make an IMPACT: Webinars on Leadership
Welcome back
everyone. To help everyone get the semester off to the right start, there are a
number of things coming up this year in LD that you should be interested in.
First, APO IMPACT is a program of guides that
provide a "how to" for the usual duties of the most common chapter
offices. To complement this, APO IMPACT
LIVE is a series of courses for conferences and live webinar sessions.
These courses will reinforce the knowledge found in the APO IMPACT officer
manuals. All programs start at
9pm EST on the dates listed below. These
are excellent programs to participate not only as a chapter officer, but as one
who may have interest in holding a position in the future. You will also find that there are some
programs intended for any member, such as the History (pledge event) or the
Senior Members, etc.
To view a schedule of the APO IMPACT LIVE webinars or to register, please click here.
The second item to consider participating in is the APO
LEADS courses. For those unfamiliar with
the Alpha Phi Omega alphabet soup of this program, it involves 5 individual
courses covering various aspects of leadership and staff development. At the Fall sectionals this year in Geneseo,
you will have an opportunity to participate in the LEAD courses, that's Launch,
Explore, Achieve, and Discover. The
Explore will be run opposite of the Achieve and Discover. That will provide an excellent opportunity to
attend some of these programs. The one
limitation to participating in the Explore, Achieve and Discover is that you
must have previous attended Launch. You
may want to consider attending a Launch prior to sectionals weekend to ensure
that you can participate in the programs on Saturday. There is a possibility of at least one Launch
being hosted on the western side of the section that would be open to everyone.
Details will be forthcoming.
If you are interested in hosting one for your area/section,
please let me know at leadership@apo89.org. To request a LEADS course, please click here. If your chapter does request a course, please let me know at the above e-mail address, I
would like to track the request to make sure they are getting processed and
scheduled in a timely fashion.
There are many more upcoming events to keep in mind, Section
Leadership Education Day (SLED) in the spring semester, the numerous SERVE!
Courses that will be hosted in February & June, etc. but I'll leave those
for another time. Good luck this year.

Everyday Excerpts to Curious Columns
While
most of this issue is compiled of submissions from section staff,
chapters are strongly encouraged to submit content for the section
newsletter as often as possible. Articles need not be a certain
length, they can be as long as you see fit. Likewise, do not
hesitate to submit content for the newsletter if writing is not your strong suit. I am happy to review and edit submissions as necessary. Some ideas for entries are as follows:
Service:
We'd love to hear stories about upcoming or past service
projects. Consider planning service projects that can be open to
the section. The newsletter is a great way to advertise your
project. Writing an article for the section newsletter can help
to shed light on a particular cause or organization important to your
chapter.
Fellowship:
Does your chapter have any unusual or funny traditions? Write an
article or submit a photo of the tradition in action. Nothing says brotherhood like a chapter shot of every brother in letters!
Campus/City Life: Is your university or college planning a campus-wide fundraiser? How are your local sports teams doing? If any festivals, concerts or traveling shows coming to town, perhaps some Brothers would be interested in attending.
Mascot Adventures:
Mascots are an important part of many chapters, you may find it
tempting to write a story around your chapter mascot. Perhaps
bring your mascot to a local landmark or hot-spot on campus. Snap
a photo of your mascot on the road.
Any and all submissions are
welcome. At the very least I would like chapters to e-mail me
about upcoming events for the calendar portion of the newsletter or a
quick recap of the last week's festivities. I'd be proud to
report on anything from pledge class size to potluck dinners.
Lastly,
remember that by sharing ideas and experiences, we allow others to
learn and grow just as we have. I look forward to hearing from
you all.
