Top 10 Things I Learned at Sectionals
1) In the spirit of service, APO brothers would sacrifice themselves for human kind in the
event of a zombie invasion 2) Alpha Beta Beta is alive! 3) One anecdote about bad public speaking makes for a great keynote 4) The Section Chair is actually a giant cat (and there are many kittens starving for attention
in New Jersey!) 5) Spray painting letters in the dark and freezing cold is awesome 6) Alpha Phi Omega would really make an excellent Dr. Seuss book 7) Bagged lunches means everybody eats on time 8) Rush and Retention are topics of concern for many chapters in Section 89 9) Section business meetings can be productive without going into lunch 10) The mountainous environment of Geneseo is not conducive to wheely briefcases
Next month's Top 10 topic is: Winter Service Projects. Send in your favorite seasonal (snowy or just plain cold!) service projects.

Adopt A Troop Information
Section Representatives and chapter Presidents should have received an e-mail from one of the section staff's Scouting Coordinators, Jon Seiler. As discussed earlier in the semester, Jon is looking for each chapter to designate someone as the "Scouting" representative. More than one representative is fine, especially if a chapter wants to name one person for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Jon requested the information by December 9th. If your chapter doesn't have a scouting coordinator yet, contact your Section Rep., President or e-mail Jon here. The sooner Section 89 gets coordinated, the faster we can offer assistance to local troops in need.

Popcorn Pals
On Friday, November 20th, the brothers of Mu Lambda and myself gathered at a shipping dock west of the city of Rochester. A blistery afternoon considering the warmer winter weather we've been receiving, it was a good day to go to work. Three teams of volunteers, many former Boy Scouts and still locally involved, banded together to sort a warehouse piled to the ceiling with boxes bearing shapes that made me hungry for Lucky Charms. We grouped dozens of popcorn orders, stacking palettes outside for troops to pick up at their designated times. Thanks for the efforts and efficiency put forth by all involved, all the orders were grouped 3 whole hours ahead of schedule.
To those who need help with recruitment, attending a Boy Scout function never disappoints -- Mu Lambda walked off with a few leads on former scouts that are now students at the University of Rochester. The BSA volunteers were extremely appreciatve for the extra help and look forward to working with brothers in the near future.

Elections Paperwork & National Service Week
A friendly reminder from your Section Reps and Section Chair:
Chapters that have elected new officers please be sure to fill out the necessary paperwork!! Forms can be found, filled, and submitted here. Forms should be filled out by the chapter president or secretary by no later than October 1st or February 1st for Fall and Spring, respectively.
In case you still haven't submitted for NSW, the official dates of the project are 11/1 - 11/7, however, if your chapter participated in the service portion of Sectionals, this does count! Additionally, if the chapter has done ANY project prior to 11/15 that relates to this year's theme (Service to the Earth), it can and should report this. If your chapter does not meet the requirements above, the chapter should still be reporting their non-participation.

Epsilon Sigma '04
Nicknames: Pantsless, Richter
Hometown: Glendale (Queens), NY
Degree(s): Well over 100 credit hours, but no actual degree. Oh education system, how you mock me so.
Dream Job: Dean of a Uni/Coll Department. To some that sounds like punishment.
Previous Positions Held in APO: Vice President of Service, Secretary, Web updater person, Historian previously. I developed a batch of really obscure lesson plans for the pledge program one year. In addition to being the Communications Coordinator now, I'm the Section Rep. for Mu Lambda.
Random Fact #1: When I was in high school, I worked after-school at a gun factory.
Random Fact #2: I used to have a pet hedgehog named Sir Galahad. See pic above.
What is your best memory of APO?: Any weekend spent at Schoellkopf is a weekend well spent.
What is one goal (personal or otherwise) you would like to accomplish this year?: Maintain my 3.9 GPA. 20 days left in the year, it's lookin' realllll good for me.
If you had $1,000,000 what would you do with it?: Buy property, fix it up, rent, profit! Also, I'd give my future siblings-in-law some dough to start up that frozen yogurt/smoothie business they keep yabbering about. Back to top |

Membership Academy Comes to Buffalo
What exactly is the Membership Academy, you ask? Well, I have an answer for you. The National APO website describes the Membership Academy as "a weekend long skills training course designed to educate APO brothers in the basics of chapter membership operations. Participants will receive hands-on training from volunteer staff, network with brothers and alumni from around the country, and leave the course with tangible skills, ideas, information, and membership action plans that they can bring back and use immediately in their home chapters."
This course is only offered in a few select cities every year and we're excited to see that next year boasts a session right here in our own Section 89! While all brothers are invited to attend, priority registration is given to actives and petitioning/interest group members. If you are interested in attending, save the date (7/23/2010)! You can register online here. Back to Top | |
