A Whole Season of Service Ahead
Welcome Pledges!
Dear Pledges,
Welcome and congratulations on taking your first step to becoming a true
brother of Alpha Phi Omega!!! By taking the oath of pledgeship during your
induction ceremony, you have embarked upon a rigorous, but tremendous journey
designed to strengthen you in Leadership, Friendship and Service.
This is a great opportunity not only to learn more about our fraternity,
your chapter, and soon-to-be fellow brothers, but yourself and your potential.
I hope that you will enjoy the pledging process and find a home, a family in
Alpha Phi Omega; the brothers in your chapter and throughout the section are
here to guide you and cheer you on. I also hope that throughout your time this
semester you forge unbreakable bonds of support and friendship, seek the
humility to make a better world through service, and find the confidence to
trust yourself and others as you take the reins of leadership.
I look forward to meeting each of you and greeting you as brothers!
Yours in L, F & S

Cooking Corner
Feed your growing chapter's hunger pains with these delicious dishes!
Old Glory Gold Peanut Butter Cookies
1/2 c margarine
1/2 c granulated sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c peanut butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/4 c flour
Cream sugars, margarine, and peanut butter. Beat in egg and
vanilla. Then, sift (if possible) and stir in remaining ingredients. Use a
spoon to form rough balls of dough about 1-1 1/2 in. in diameter on an
ungreased, non-stick cookie sheet. Using a fork, gently press down on the
balls, lift and then repeat at a right angle. The fork is used to create
patterning only, do not use it to squash the dough. Bake at 350° for 10
minutes. Cookies will appear as though they are not fully done, but allow them
to cool on the tray for 5 minutes where they will finish cooking.
Royal Dip w/ Blue Corn Chips
8 oz. cream cheese
8 oz. refried beans
16 oz. prepared salsa
shredded cheese
corn chips, blue
Spread cream cheese evenly on the bottom of a
8x8 baking dish. Cover evenly with refried beans. Cover generously with salsa.
Cover with shredded cheese in a thick layer. Bake in the oven at 350° until
cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve with blue corn chips. Back to top

Adopt - A - Troop
This year Section 89 is committed to building relationships
with local Boy and Girl Scout troops. In doing so, we need each chapter's help
to become more involved. This year's
theme is Adopt-A-Troop. What does this
mean? This means that each chapter in
Section 89 will be responsible for creating and building a partnership with a
local Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troop within the chapter's own local area.
It is highly suggested that a representative be designated
from each chapter to be the Scouting Coordinator, who will be the contact
person between the local scout troop and APO. In doing so, this individual will be
reporting at the chapter meetings with any updated information to share with
and from the troop. The Scouting
Coordinator will be in contact with the Troop Leader to gain any upcoming
calendar events, community service or awards.
Information such as service projects that scouts are working on and need
assistance, any awards in rank or merit, any special projects and any other
notes such as campouts, cookies, or other activities, etc., should be passed
along to the chapter. This information
should be noted during the chapter meeting and also in the chapter minutes.
Once I compile the information, we will send out a letter to
the Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops to show our initiative in what we would
like to do, in regarding Adopt - A - Troop.
The letter to the leaders of the troops will include who we are, what we
do, why we are doing this and the benefits for the scout troops as well. Once the letters go out in the mail, the chapters will be
contacted to let them know that the letters went out to the leaders.
If each chapter can get back to either Robyn Walker or I
with the troop that they would like to adopt by October 31st, it
would be greatly appreciated. Also, if
each chapter could identify one or two people who would like to be the scouting
coordinator for their chapter and then send us the contact information, it
would be helpful so we know who to contact.
If you need help in locating a chapter, please contact one of us and we
will be gladly to assist you on this.

Fruit Basket
Chi Pi is inviting the
other chapters in Section 89 to join them in a round of apple-picking this
year! To b etter accommodate others in
location and variety, Chi Pi has settled on Bence Apple Farm (30 minutes out
from Fredonia). For picky pickers, this
particular farm offers over 14 different kinds of apples (sorry, no macintosh!)
including empire apples and cortlands. The
cost for a bag of apples (half-bushel) is around $12. If you don't have the cash to dole out on
fruit, Chi Pi is more than willing to hold a mini-taste test for accompanying
brothers. The event is being held on
Saturday, October 3rd so act fast!
Fredonia will be leaving at around 1:30pm so brothers who want to attend
should plan on arriving at the orchard at around 2:30pm. The address is 1355 Brant North Collins Road
(Route 249), Brant, NY 14111.

Spooky Service, Frightening Fellowship
This Saturday, Mu Lambda's going to learn quite a bit about local history by cleaning up the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Formed
by glaciers, Mount Hope Cemetery's landscape features high hills and deep
valleys, winding eskers and deep kettles. Since the cemetery's dedication in
1838, a third of a million people have taken permanent residence in this
198-acre site where you will find stately mausoleums dug deep into hillsides,
and myriad examples of Victorian funerary art reaching toward the heavens.
Stone and bronze monuments include soaring Egyptian obelisks, miniature Greek
temples (one sleeps 20 with a lot of dancing room left over), winged angels of
mercy, draped urns and broken columns, Gothic towers, and sculptures of
everything from Christian saints to favorite pet dogs.
In fall and winter, Mount Hope becomes a rookery, and the trees appear fully
leafed with crows. In summer, a high 1875 Florentine fountain cascades water
from lions' mouths down through three basins held up by cast-iron caryatids.
Famous residents include Susan B. Anthony (suffragette), Fredrick Douglass (abolitionist), Myron Holley (visionary for the Erie Canal), novelist Elizabeth Frost and the founders of Bausch and Lomb. Mt. Hope will be offering tours of the grounds throughout the month of October. The admission is $4 and additional information can be found at the Friends of Mt. Hope website.

since our last issue. If you haven't
yet, please take a moment to navigate to our section website and register. Registration is important! In the near future, private content may be
restricted to registered users.
Additionally, you must be logged in to use the forums. A sidebar on the main page has been added to
offer a quick glance at what topics are active on the boards right now. Let us know you're keeping up by replying to
one of the already created boards or be daring and create your own. There's no reason to be shy, we're all
brothers!
Other additions to the site include more staff biographies
to help you get better acquainted with Section 89 staff, as well as a new
sidebar that lists upcoming events for Section 89. Don't forget to check the leadership section
for a list of webinars, one of the next courses is in $ fundraising $.

ZooBoo
Knock, knock. Who's there? Boo! Boo who? Don't cry, Mu Lambda's got a great event planned for this Halloween!
For those of you looking to
do something in the spirit of service this upcoming Halloween, Mu Lambda has a
suggestion for you. Seneca Park Zoological
Society hosts an annual event that is aimed at being fun for visitors of all
ages. In 2002, Seneca Park revamped its
annual "Spooktacular" event into something for the whole family. Dubbed "ZooBoo," this affair offers a range of
animal presentations, live entertainment, games, crafts and activities for
children and adults. Children are
encouraged to come dressed as their favorite characters or animals and take
part in a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt around the Zoo.
Volunteers are needed to setup and decorate the week before the event.
And Mu Lambda will be on hand during the event to help hand out candy
and prizes, man games and crafts, sell raffle tickets, help with
tattooing, serve as parking lot attendants, dress up as Rocky (the
Zoo's penguin mascot), and cleanup. Training will be given the day of
the event. Dates for ZooBoo are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and
Sundays, October 17, 18, 24 & 25, 2009. For further information
contact the event chair from Mu Lambda, Andrew.

Be a Leader...
Tri-Sectionals will be hosting a Launch, Explore, Achieve
and a Discover. In addition to this
Launch, two requests for Launchs have been made and fulfilled for our section:
October 17th, 12pm - Epsilon Sigma - SUNY Buffalo - Click here to RSVP October 17th, 10am - Alpha Beta Xi - SUNY Geneseo - Click here to RSVP
These courses are open to all brothers in the section. Please register with the individual chapters
by so we can plan for the appropriate number of presenters. RSVP must be done by October 10th. You may e-mail a chapter by clicking on the links above.
While many chapters would like to hold their
own Launches, please be aware that a minimum of 12 must be in attendance to
host this course. If there is doubt that
your chapter can fulfill this requirement, it is strongly encouraged that you
attend one of the Launches listed above or coordinate with another chapter to
schedule a Launch.
Additionally, chapters should be aware that the Chapter Office List was due on October 1st. For
those of you who have not yet filed this form, it must be done
immediately. The form needs to be
submitted by any chapter that elected new officers at the end of last semester
OR has had a change in officers since last semester. This form can be completed here.
